Veterans of the heroic Arctic Convoys were today awarded the new official Arctic Emblem by the Ministry of Defence after a 9 year campaign for recognition. Today 11th October 2006 is the anniversary of the first convoy arriving at Archangel in Russia 65 years ago. Winston Churchill referred to the convoys as "suicide runs". Onboard the royal navy's most famous ship, aircraft carrier HMS Ark Royal, 10 Scottish veterans received the emblems in official recognition of their bravery.
